Set in the soaring brickwork and girders of the former Saatchi & Saatchi garage, scene of many infamous warehouse parties; now houses new creative spirits in the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and just a stone’s throw from the harbour. Hickson House is the home of our craft spirits distillery, set in the historic Metcalfe Bond Stores, The Rocks.

As you step into our parlour-styled barbershop, you’ll soon be immersed in the nostalgic atmosphere of a bygone era and the subtle rhythmic sounds of cocktail shakers exuding from our adjoining Cocktail Bar. A pleasant and refined space where the classic atmosphere contributes to a feeling of well-being.

After the success of the Barber shop/Cocktail Bar concept in Sydney’s CBD, Barrelhouse Group Directors Mikey Enright and Julian Train have launched yet another classic and classy inner-city venue. They wanted to bring their vision of a mid-1800’s tavern to life and created The Duke of Clarence.

Mike Enright

Originally from the UK, Mike Enright (or sometimes known as Mikey) started his hospitality career in 1990, running Public Houses in the North of England and later trained in London as a Cocktail Bartender. He moved to Sydney, Australia in 1999.

During his time in Australia he has opened some of the most successful, award-winning Premium Restaurants & Cocktail Bars in Sydney including The Loft, Zeta Bar, Merivale portfolio Bars including Ivy as ‘Group Bars Manager’.

In 2013 Mikey ventured out with his business partner to open the ‘Barber Shop ’ in Sydney, which gained Global recognition. Among national awards, it also won ‘Gin Bar of the Year’ in 2016/17/18. Also ‘Bar of the Year’ ALIA’s in 2018. Late 2017 Mike opened ‘The Duke of Clarence’. A British Tavern which has gained great recognition by the locals and Hospitality Industry. Hickson House Distilling Co, opened in late 2021 in the Rocks Sydney, they launched Hickson Rd Gin range and have already won awards. Barrelhouse Cellars, a boutique liqour and wine store is there latest venture.

He has consulted on prestigious bars across Asia. He’s got his own Gin ‘scented’ grooming range and developed a mixer range in the UK and Australia, named Artisan Drinks Co. He is also the Chairman of the Australian Gin Distillers Awards.

His personal achievement’s led him to be named ‘Time Out Legend Award’ in 2014, ‘7th Most Influential Bar Professional’ in 2015, 3 times winner of ‘Bar Manager of the Year’ by two bar publications and ‘Prestigious Outstanding Contribution Award’ 2017.

Julian Train

With a 20 year career in hospitality spanning bars, restaurants and pubs, in recent years Julian has been head of on premise at Amatil Australia; managing strategy for market leading brands like Yamazaki, Hakushu, Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Canadian Club and Jim Beam to name a few.

Julian has been awarded with Beam Suntory’s prestigious “Global Presidents Award” for setting up “The Exchange” go to market strategy; has won numerous innovation awards for work including the Mixxit retail unit and the FORMULA bartender training app.

Living in Avalon in NSW Julian and his wife Kirstin Ash have 2 children, Ollie and Lila.
